Born in 1915, a year after the outbreak of the First World War, aged 14 at the time of the Wall Street Crash’s, a teenager during the Depression, a student under the New Deal, Miller’s story, told with astonishing vividness and skill, is already the story of America in the twentieth century. In becoming a writer of plays that probed at the very essence of what it is to be an American, he also became the conscience of his country. As a brilliant intellectual with Broadway at his feet and Marilyn Monroe at his side, he seemed to reconcile impossible opposites and turn the American dream into reality. And with the collapse of that dream, Miller has become a citizen of the world, travelling widely - frequently in the company of photographer Inge Morant, his wife for the past 25 years - and working tirelessly for the physical and intellectual freedom of writers everywhere.
