Sydney, a beautiful city, was splendid from its very beginnings. Against a backdrop of one of the finest harbours in the world - with a landscape of coves and beaches, headlands, promontories and islands - the builders of Sydney could scarcely fail to be inspired. From the first rudiments of settlement there rose a handsome Georgian city, later to be overlaid by Victorian, Federation and Art Deco styles - and then by the gleaming steel and glass of modern times.

Many fine buildings of long establishment still stand amid the high-rise. The city thoroughfares still echo the haphazard planning of the past - narrow and meandering as they follow the landscape. The surrounding suburbs, like Balmain, ThenRocks and Paddington still reflect the picturesque past. The look and life of Old Sydney is reflected in this fine collection of photographs.
