Gertrude Morel is locked in a deeply unsatisfying marriage. Her collier husband is no longer the handsome, vigorous, fun-loving man she married. Walter Morel is irresponsible, coarse and brutish, a man quick to raise his fists and drown his sorrows. Unable to change him, Gertrude gradually abandons him, investing her emotional energy - indeed her entire life - in her children, especially eldest son William. When William secures a job in London, Gertrude is bereft, the loss doubly felt when he takes up with shallow, frivolous Gyp. Then tragedy strikes, and the focus of Gertrude’s life shifts. But history threatens to repeat itself as another of her sons is torn between maternal love and the desire to strike out into the world. Lawrence’s largely autobiographical masterpiece is an emotional cauldron dealing with passion, fulfilment and love as a stifling as well as nurturing force.
