Robert Frost was once regarded as America’s unofficial poet laureate, although his popularity has led to his works suffering from over-simplification. In his introduction Ian Hamilton draws attention to the complexities that lie beneath the apparent limpidity of Frost’s poems, which speak as much of the escapism of isolation as of sturdy self-sufficiency; they are self-critical and discomforting.
