Former detective George Palmer-Jones is on a birdwatching trip to Cornwall, having been hired by the anxious parents of Greg Franks, who want their errant son returned home. 

For George, who might have otherwise turned the case down flat, the offer of a free week’s birdwatching is too tempting to resist but when a rare and unrecorded sea bird captures all the birders’ attention the unthinkable happens and Greg, the most fanatical birder of them all, disappears from right under their noses.

When his corpse, the head bludgeoned, is found floating in the sea, George must unhappily shoulder the burden of finding out why the young man has been murdered.
