Winter blanketed the land and made a snow palace of the secluded country home at Varykino. The wind moaned outside; the wolves howled. Warm candle glow melted a patch of ice on the window. And Yuri Zhivago, with the beautiful Lara sleeping nearby, wrote poetry. He wrote of the joy of love, the pain of parting, the hope of religious experience.
Thus, within the framework of his magnificent novel Doctor Zhivago, Boris Pasternak created these evocative poems attributed to his title character.
