Johnny Ruffo came to Australia's attention when he entered The X Factor in
2011. A concreter with a cheeky smile and a long-held passion for music, he won millions of hearts and eventually placed third. Sony Music rushed to sign him up, and he was offered a guest spot on Australia's favourite soap, Home and Away, which turned into a three-year role.
But the sudden rise to fame took its toll. Johnny found it hard to resist the parties, drugs, alcohol and fair-weather friends that came with the territory.
He started suffering from severe headaches, which he put down to his lifestyle - and then his girlfriend, Tahnee, noticed something was wrong with his speech. Johnny was rushed to hospital, where doctors immediately operated to remove a tumour from his brain. Ultimately, he was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer - despite a period of remission, he still battles with his cancer today. But, in a strange way, there is a positive side to the situation: Johnny feels that cancer has given him a completely different perspective on life.
Maintaining his irrepressible sense of humour throughout, in No Finish Line Johnny confronts the many battles and triumphs of his life with great honesty, strong in his conviction that writing this book will have been worthwhile if it glos encourage people to cherish life that little bit more.
And of course, there's always the music ...
