But with fame and record-breaking sales came riotous excess and spiralling problems, and Duff partied right up until the moment he washed to hospital with a burst pancreas in 1994. The man who lent his name to the beer used in The Simpsons realised something had to change.

His orthodox regime involved a two-year period of celibacy, hardcore exercise and enrolling at Seattle University to study economics.
