This flagship work opens a window on to the wealth of material acquired by the Imperial War Museum since its inception in 1917. It includes extracts from diaries, letters, memoirs, taped interviews, service magazines and journals, together with a wide range of illustrations including photographs, posters, documents, cartoons, works of art and clips of film.

The scope is enormous. The war of the trenches, the great battles of the Western Front, the war at sea, the war in the air, ‘sideshows’ such as Gallipoli, Salonica and Kut, the contribution of women, the experience of civilians and children; these and many other subjects are represented in vivid detail.
