In the years after the 1914-1918 War high hopes were held for the future of Soldier Settlement in the newly-opened Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. There the “Returned msn” would establish their fruit farms - and make their fortunes.
It was a hot, dusty land, towns like Leeton and Griffith, large and important now, were no more than a collection of small shops and shanties. There were Heartbreaks, and for some disaster and disillusionment.
Then the growing of Rice was decided upon after experimenting with a small parcel of seed brought from America by Mr John Brady.
In those years a young city lass married a returned soldier - one who had the light of vision and love-of-the-land in his eyes - and with him and their babe went out to Griffith to pioneer a rice farm.
She tells the story of those early years now - tells it with all its pathos, all its humour, all its heartbreak, all its love…..And she tells it as only a pioneer can.
