The island of Formosa, half the size of Tasmania, has a population of ten million under the Government of them free Republic of China, led by President Chiang Kai-shek. In a visit of five weeks to Formosa, Frank Clune closely investigated the present situation there. He interviewed President Chiang Kai-shek, Madame Chiang and leaders of the Nationalist Government, and also obtained first-hand statements from Christian missionaries who had been imprisoned, tortured and expelled by the Communists, and from a Chinese General who had defected from the Red Army to join the Nationalists.
This lively book is packed with interesting information on the progress that has been made under democratic government on Formosa since the exodus of the Nationalists from the mainland of China in 1949. The facts Clune gleaned will come as a revelation to readers who may be unaware of the strength of Free China and of Chiang Kai-shek’s government, which is recognized by UN and by more than thirty nations as the lawful government of China.
