Covering the years 1900 to 1939, the photographs in this book come from the archives of the John Fairfax newspaper organisation and the State Library of New South Wales. Together they form a unique collection of the work of the pioneer press photographers and other outstanding professional and amateur photographers of the time. 

The book shows a wide range of people, events and activities from the period of Australian history that extends from the Boer War and Federation to the beginning of World War II. Included is sixteen pages of colour photography taken before 1920.
