Don’t Tell Me I Can’t Do That, Johnson’s long-awaited autobiography, marks his final year in Australian motor sport before retiring. Here, he looks back over a mercurial career and calls it as he sees it - as always.
Although racing started out as a part-time pursuit with the combative Queenslander following in the tracks of his personal heroes, it had become a full-time professional commitment by 1980. In that fateful year the celebrated incident with the rock at Bathurst made Johnson’s a household name in Australia and turned disaster into triumph.
Since then Dick Johnson AM, has firmly established himself as one of the all-time legends of the sport. His record-equaling five Australian Touring Car titles make him unique in the Championship as a season-long series. His three victories in the Bathurst 1000 - the country’s greatest test of men and machines - are scant reward for a lifetime of endeavour on his beloved Mount Panorama. He remained quick and competitive for an unmatched twenty-eight seasons.
