In 1918, after four years of bloodshed, the Allies desperately stood their ground in the trenches of the Western Front. But when the Russian Bolsheviks came to power and made peace with Germany, the Allies were left reeling. They despatched a secret mission to the frozen expanses of northern Russianto prevent the vast military stores from falling into German hands.

Iced in over the winter and with no chance of reinforcement, these men became embroiled in the Russian Civil War. In spring a special relief force, which included over one hundred Australian volunteers, was sent to extricate them. Landing in the remote northern city of Arkhangel, they battled not only a Bolshevik army, but also a climate of extremes and a wilderness of swamp and melting snow.
