The White Monkey is a romance, focusing on the marriage of Fleur and Michael Mont. Fleur, the daughter of Soames Forsyth, was disappointed in love before marriage, and now toys with the affections of her husband and his best friend. She cannot decide which man she prefers. Each aware of the other’s competition, the two are left to compete for a love not guaranteed to either. Fleur’s callous attitude is poignantly contrasted with the marriage of poor Tony Bicket and his young wife Victorine, both of whom are prepared to suffer dishonour for the sake of the other. This is a tale of troubles and of trials, but mostly one which shows us why love is worth the struggle.
