On 23rd July 1900, at Breelong near Gilgandra New South Wales, an Aboriginal named Jimmy Governor began to take revenge for injuries that his employers had done to him, or, some say, for insults that were offered to his white wife.
Remembered for their courage and ingenuity as well as their ferocity, the Governors are called the Blacksmiths here, and the novel does not purport to be an exact history of the Governors but rather a free and fictional interpretation of the terrible drama in which they became involved.
